This early winter newborn lifestyle session from last year is still one of my very favorites. The playfulness and the deeply-rooted love this family shared was abundant. And the setting – a farmhouse held for generations on their family’s working farm – was the perfect place to bring that love to life.

This gorgeous session was featured by The Fount Collective, a premier online journal showcasing beautiful family imagery. An excerpt from me in that feature:

“From the moment I was welcomed into their home by big brother until the last wave bye before driving off the property, we had fun.  It’s evident that the spirit of adventure and exploration is nurtured in their home. The coupling of a tight-knit family and wide-open spaces has produced a beautiful place for them to grow together.

Motherhood is art. And yet, it is so commonplace that we often fail to see the breathtaking wonder of the work of the mother.  If I can make someone stop for a moment and see this hidden truth, I’ve accomplished my own work.  And if that someone is the mother – if I have held up a mirror for her to see herself more clearly than ever before – I have honored the art.

Despite the cold December day, I wanted to take them out on a walk through part of their land, and they so generously obliged. And then I saw the image in my mind that would tell the story of the land, of the family. A grouping of trees stood guarding over the field, the unseen roots deep into the earth, anchoring and nourishing. The limbs above stretched to the sky as if they could fly or grow forever. And I knew we had to stand right there and take this picture. From generations unseen, preparing the roots for this mama and daddy. The mom and dad, providing the trunk of support holding a new bloom and letting this baby boy find his wings, floating to the sky as if to say “I am the branches, connected and free.”

I was honored to witness this family tree and to tell of its love.
