Part of attending the Lovesoaked Retreat was to boldly learn and grow. I decided that meant ONLY taking my film camera to one of the sessions. Film was very new to me at the time, and I’d realized I was holding back and relying on my digital camera as we worked through the workshop. I forced myself to leave my digital behind and only take my Pentax 645nii and several rolls of Portra 400 film.
It was alternately freeing and nerve-wracking. I had to wait almost a month to get my scans back and find out if anything I’d taken had turned out. The magic of film didn’t disappoint. These are some of my favorite images from the entire retreat. They’re far from perfect – I missed focus on some, the white balance isn’t totally consistent – but they are real. They highlight the growth of a family and of an artist.
